Comfort food at South Station: grilled cheese

Here is a grilled cheese sandwich I made myself. I’ve been experimenting a lot and finally got one almost perfectly grilled. I think before I’ve been putting the heat on too high, so I burned mine a lot. I’m proud of this one because since I started using wheat bread instead of white, it’s harder to get them to look nice, but for once I managed :) For cheese, I currently use one individually wrapped slice of processed American cheese, and then thin slices of extra sharp cheddar.

This is from Café Kushco in Salem, Massachusetts. They use provolone cheese, which was interesting since I’ve never had it before, and have several bread choices, including foccacia, wheat, and white. I thought there was a little too much cheese, but it was easily removable. I wasn’t hungry enough to finish my sandwich, but it tasted pretty good and was a good size. The bread was nice and thick and it was cooked perfectly.

Roxy's Grilled Cheese (Chz Plz! a blog for the lactose tolerant)

This place also has a twitter account- @RoxysGrilledChz. Sounds like a grilled cheese restaurant is opening up right in Boston!

This is from Five Guys Burgers and Fries, which has locations in 35 states and 4 provinces. It tasted great and was thicker than most sandwiches, but was a little small and not especially crunchy. It looks a bit burnt in this picture, but was actually cooked very well.

The Grilled Cheese Invitational

Here’s The Original from Grilled Cheese & Co in Catonsville, Maryland. It cost $5, but for $2 more you get a side and a drink. I can’t speak for the other sides, but I got shoestring french fries and there were more than enough.

They made the sandwiches by brushing pre-melted butter onto each side, instead of spreading butter on with a knife. This worked perfectly, and the sandwich tasted amazing. The cheese was melted evenly all over the sandwich, which was a decent size. The other thing I liked was that the bread ended up thicker and much less flattened than grilled cheese I make at home.
